Privacy Policy

Short version: „Pathlog records your GPS location only while you are actively using the app to track a route. All your data is stored exclusively on your device or in your own personal iCloud account. We do not operate any servers, collect analytics, or share your data with advertisers or other third parties.“

Data We Collect and Why

2.1 Precise Location

What: GPS coordinates (latitude, longitude, altitude) and the time at which each point was recorded.

Why: This represents the app’s fundamental capability to record GPS tracks.

When: Location is read only while a recording is active (indicated by the red record button). The app requests When In Use permission and uses background location mode to maintain recording when your screen is locked during active tracking.

Where it goes: Saved exclusively to your device’s local storage, or to your personal iCloud Drive if you have iCloud enabled. The data never leaves Apple’s infrastructure and is never sent to our servers.

2.2 Reverse Geocoding (Track Names)

What: The GPS coordinates of the starting point of each track you save.

Why: To automatically generate a human-readable name for the track (for example, „Munich, Bavaria“).

How: We send the single start-point coordinate to Apple’s CLGeocoder service over an encrypted connection. This occurs once per saved track. Apple governs this data under their Privacy Policy. The app receives only the resulting place name; the coordinate is not retained.

2.3 App Preferences

What: A small number of preference values stored in your device’s local storage (UserDefaults):

Whether you have seen the onboarding screen
Your chosen tracking mode (Accuracy / Balanced / Energy Saving)
Your preferred sort order for the track list
A counter of how many tracks you have saved (used to enforce the free-plan limit)

These values remain on your device at all times. We never read them.

2.4 Purchase Information

In-app purchases (Pathlog Pro) are processed entirely by Apple through the App Store. We receive only a confirmation of the transaction status (purchased / not purchased). Payment details, Apple ID, and billing address remain unknown to the developer. Apple’s Privacy Policy governs payment data handling.

Data We Do Not Collect

We do not collect, process, or have access to any of the following:

Your name, email address, or any account information
Crash reports or diagnostic data
Analytics or usage statistics
Advertising identifiers (IDFA)
Any data from your contacts, camera, microphone, or photos

The app contains no third-party analytics SDK, no advertising SDK, and no social-media integration.

Data Storage and Retention

Your GPS tracks are stored as files in the app’s Documents folder on your device. If you have iCloud Drive enabled and have granted permission, these files are automatically synced to your personal iCloud account using Apple’s standard document storage mechanisms. Files are never transmitted to developer-operated servers.

Tracks you delete are moved to a „Recently Deleted“ folder within the same storage location and are permanently removed after 30 days, or immediately if you choose to empty the folder.

You remain in complete control of your data at all times.

Data Sharing

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with any third parties. The only data transmissions that occur are:

Apple iCloud – syncing your own track files between your own devices, under your own Apple ID.
Apple CLGeocoder – a single coordinate per saved track to obtain a place name (see Section 2.2).
Apple App Store – processing in-app purchases (see Section 2.4).

In all three cases Apple acts as the data controller for those specific interactions, and their privacy practices are governed by Apple’s own policies.

Children’s Privacy

Pathlog is not directed at children under the age of 13 (or 16 in the European Economic Area). We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. Contact the developer if you believe otherwise.

Your Rights Under the GDPR

For those in the EEA, UK, or Switzerland:

Right of access – You can view all your data directly within the app at any time.
Right to erasure – You can delete individual tracks, empty the Recently Deleted folder, or delete the app entirely to remove all associated data from your device.
Right to data portability – You can export any track as a standard GPX or KML file using the share options in the Track Detail view.
Right to object / restriction – You can stop the app from recording location data at any time by tapping the stop button, or by revoking location permission in iOS Settings → Pathlog → Location.

Because we do not receive or store your data on any server, most of these rights can be exercised directly within the app or iOS without needing to contact us. For assistance, contact pathlogsupport@timbrex.de with a 30-day response guarantee.

Legal Basis for Processing (GDPR)

The legal basis for processing your precise location data is your explicit consent, provided when you grant location permission to the app (Article 6(1)(a) GDPR). Consent may be withdrawn by revoking location permission or deleting the app.

Security

Your data is stored using the standard iOS file protection mechanisms, which encrypt data at rest using your device passcode. Data transmitted to Apple’s iCloud and geocoding services is encrypted in transit using TLS. Reasonable technical measures protect all data interactions.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will indicate the date of the most recent revision at the top of this page. Continued use of the app after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy. Significant changes receive in-app notification.
